Carrying on the legacy…
When I was a child, my grandfather owned a country store where the locals did all their shopping. You would find everything from groceries for the kitchen, to clothing for the family, and everything in between; all in a one room store.
It was a place where the locals would come to purchase jeans, t-shirts and cane knives (to manually cut sugarcane) for the men and boys in the family. Yes, sugarcane was cut by hand. The locals would even purchase clothes for the entire family, nothing fancy, just everyday clothing.
On those cold Cajun winter nights, the locals would come in and purchase items to make a gumbo for supper (our meal at night). One would find gumbo pots, gumbo bowls and silverware for setting the table. One would even purchase cooking oil and flour to make the roux for the gumbo, and bell peppers, onions, sausage and chicken to put in the gumbo. Now we purchase roux in a jar. Today, my grandmother simply would not understand. Then potatoes, eggs and mayonnaise (my-nez) for potato salad were put on the counter for purchase. Last, but not least, the locals would poke all the loaves of Evangeline Maid bread. Once the softest loaf was found, it was selected to be served with the gumbo and potato salad.
I also remember, no matter what time of day it was, there was always a fresh pot of coffee brewing in the store. My grandparents always had time to sit and visit with the locals. They would chat for a moment over a fresh brewed cup of coffee. When the locals would leave, you would hear my grandparents say, “Bien Merci Beaucoup,” which means “Thank You Very Much”. On Saturday evenings, you would hear the locals say “Laisse Le Bon Temps Rouler,” which means “Let The Good Times Roll.” Cajuns believe in working hard all week, and playing hard on Saturday nights. Sunday’s were for going to church, then taking long country rides to visit family and friends.
Now, here we are in the 21st century; and my have we grown. The country stores have vanished, because the locals are now working in the big cities and getting their shopping done at the big chain stores. I have decided to keep my grandfather’s legacy alive by opening Borel's Cajun Zing Seasoning on the world-wide-web. Now he surely would not understand how you can do business with the whole world while sitting at your computer in your home. And, he surely would not understand how today the whole world is considered to be the locals.
